A clinical trial of Conovid-E (2.5 mg norethynodrel with .1 mg ethinyl estradiol-3-methyl ether) for 1114 woman-months was undertaken. Results were compared with those of Conovid (5 mg norethynodrel with .075 mg ethinyl estradiol-3-methyl ether). No pregnancies were reported by patients who used the pills regularly. Amenorrhea was reported in a small percentage of patients. 8 patients were transferred to the 5 mg tablet after 3-8 cycles with breakthrough bleeding. 2 of the women had breakthrough bleeding even on 10 mg norethynodrel 52% had decreased menstrual loss and 8% noted an increase. There was no consistent trend in changes of breast tenderness dysmenorrhea premenstrual tension and weight changes. Isolated incidences of abdominal cramping and change in vaginal discharge were reported. 7 patients developed cervical erosions during the first 5 cycles. The most frequently complained of side effect was nausea which disappeared after the first 3 cycles. Ovulatio n and fertility appeared to be unimpaired after cessation of contraception.
