Abstract In order to assess the DNA repair capacity of lens epithelial cells from different mammalian species, we have UV irradiated whole lenses taken from rat, rabbit, cat, dog and horse. After incubation with 3H Thymidine in MEM'199 the lens epithelium was dissected out and mounted for autoradiography. We then compared the amount of Unscheduled DNA Synthesis (UDS) in these samples. p]The results show that UDS in this quiescent tissue, composed of highly differentiated cells, is directly proportional to the maximum, potential lifespan of each mammalian species tested. Our observations generalize this striking phenomenon first described by Hart and Setlow (1974) on cultured fibroblasts.
