Although Spain’s conquest of America has been better documented, her involvement in North Africa and the Mediterranean has a longer history. Having for centuries formed part of Mediterranean empires as a result of conquest by others, the north-eastern inhabitants of the Iberian peninsula established the foundations of a Mediterranean empire in the Middle Ages, before the emergence of a united Spanish state. More than two centuries before the unification of Castile and Aragón brought Spanish unity in the fifteenth century, the Catalans had established a dominant presence in the western Mediterranean, centred upon Barcelona.
