Abstract

Since his death in 1946, numerous biographers and chemical historians have commented on the failure of the American chemist, G. N. Lewis, to receive a Nobel Prize in chemistry. Based largely on the work of the chemical historian, Patrick Coffey, this paper summarizes the documents pertaining to Lewis found in the archives of the Nobel Prize Institute and what they have to say concerning the mystery of Lewis’s missing Nobel Prize.
