This paper focuses on two theological works by Philoxenus of Mabbog (d. 523) in which the author considers Ephrem's theological views. One is an early work, the Mmr against Habbib (482-484); the other is the Letter to the monks of Senoun, which may be dated to 521. In the early work, quotations from Ephrem's work occupy a prominent position, but in the later work only a very few quotations are found and the author criticizes the imprecision of Ephrem's language. This change in attitude between the earlier and the later work is symptomatic of the transition through which Syriac Christianity passed around the year 500. Syriac theological thought was reconfigured along the lines of Greek patristic theology and the legacy of Ephrem, "our Syrian teacher," caused some discomfort. 2
