Abstract

Economists have generally distinguished between various types of unemployment, in terms of both their characteristic features and their underlying causal mechanisms. Some of these distinctions are non-controversial and relatively straightforward both in their definition and in their measurement. Thus, for example, there is not too much disagreement about the scale and nature of ‘seasonal unemployment’ or about the need for ‘seasonal adjustments’ to the regular monthly series of unemployment statistics published in all industrial countries.
