Abstract

The decay of J/\ensuremathψ to three photons is studied using \ensuremathψ(3686)\ensuremath→\ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath-J/\ensuremathψ in a sample of 1.0641\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi108 \ensuremathψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector. Evidence of the direct decay of \ensuremathηc to two photons, \ensuremathηc\ensuremath→\ensuremathγ\ensuremathγ, is reported, and the product branching fraction is determined to be B(J/\ensuremathψ\ensuremath→\ensuremathγ\ensuremathηc,\phantom\rule0ex0ex\ensuremathηc\ensuremath→\ensuremathγ\ensuremathγ)=(4.5\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi1.2\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.6)\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi10^\ensuremath-6, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The branching fraction for J/\ensuremathψ\ensuremath→3\ensuremathγ is measured to be (11.3\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi1.8\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi2.0)\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi10^\ensuremath-6 with improved precision.
