This article discusses the bitter dispute between the two groups that vied for control of\nthe National Salon of Artists in 1969: the Museum of Modern Art and the Colombian Society\nof Fine Arts. This quarrel took the form of a rout of attacks and insults that radicalized the\npositions and caused a double departure: Marta Traba�s resignation from the tacit direction\nof the Museum of Modern Art, followed by her leaving the country, and the daring extraction\nof that museum�s collection from a university campus. To follow this conflict, it was necessary\nto revise the Central Historical Archive of the National University of Colombia, and to trace\nthe articles from major newspapers of the time, in order to understand how altercations and\nscandals were to become distinctive features in the constitution of the Colombian artistic field,\nwhere battles are fought from the bulwark of group interests, instead of intellectual ideals\nsurrounding art, while at the same time all parties claim to be defenders of the �true� values of\nnational fine arts
