The taxonomic treatment of Trichophaea paludosa is discussed both morphologically and phylogenetically. A new genus, Pseudotrichophaea, is proposed to accommodate this cup-fungus, as well as a new species coming from North America, named P. americana. The latter was until now called Trichophaea paludosa, but a thorough examination showed that it possesses larger ascospores than European collections. Molecular data confirmed it represents an independent taxon. Finally, the erroneous interpretation by some authors of Trichophaea pseudogregaria (a late synonym of P. paludosa in its original sense) is resolved thanks to type revisions of some old names of Velenovský. The new combination, Wilcoxina terrestris, is proposed to accommodate some collections erroneously named Trichophaea pseudogregaria.
