The chromium position in highly doped ruby has been determined from 00· l intensity data. Cr occupies a site 0.06 Å from the normal Al position. Contrary to recent crystal-field calculations, the shift is towards the nearest Al neighbor, increasing the smaller metal–oxygen distances.
