Abstract

In his seminal work on atomic x-rays, Moseley analysed frequencies in terms of Bohr's recently-published atomic theory. In the light of modern understanding, Moseley's analysis, repeated in most modern texts, is unsatisfactory; in particular his cannot be interpreted as a simple shielding constant. A simple consistent model for Moseley's results based on the Bohr theory is described; it uses outer as well as inner shielding, and is in good agreement with experiment.
