More than 20 years ago, the AAOS Board of Directors authorized an ambitious program: the development of an orthopaedic review journal written, edited, and published by our Academy. Following the initial editorial guidance of Dr. John Frymoyer, the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons has become the most widely read orthopaedic journal in the world. Based on this success and our members’ desire for high-quality, relevant, current orthopaedic knowledge, the “Yellow Journal” has embarked on to the next phase of its evolution: the monthly publication of original research. This combination of clinical and basic science studies now enhances the educational opportunity for all readers. After almost one year of preparation, JAAOS now publishes the “Green Section,” the result of unsolicited submissions from around the world. Author response has been overwhelming, with more than 200 submissions thus far. However, as the Editor Emeritus of JAAOS (and in my new role as Editor, Research), I am well aware of the responsibility asked of the reviewers, staff, and me. Quality will not be compromised for quantity. No article will be published unless it passes the same rigorous peer review process that our readers expect. To date, only 13% of submissions have been accepted for publication. Expansion of our Academy journal also grants us a remarkable opportunity. We are in the process of recruiting and organizing a staff of ten new Deputy Editors, Research, as well as scores of new reviewers to work alongside the current editorial staff. I encourage our members to become more involved with the AAOS and JAAOS. Opportunities exist for peer reviewers and authors. On behalf of the editorial staff and me, we hope you find the “Green Section” to be educational and enjoyable to read. You may expect to see this new section in JAAOS on a monthly basis. As I said in my first editorial, published more than 7 years ago in these pages, “This is the Academy’s Journal”—and I remain honored and proud to be involved.
