The previously accepted date of 652 B.C. for the date of the death of Gyges is shown to be inaccurate, being based upon false reasoning from the Assyrian inscriptions. A new chronology for the reign of Gyges is proposed wherein the numerous Cimmerian and Scythian incursions in both Lydia and the Ancient Near East are discussed. In addition, a terminus is established for the Scythian war with Psammetichus I of Egypt.
