Orientation studies have \nrecently received considerable attention in the archaeological \ndomain as a source of information that may shed light on a number of anthropological \nissues such as beliefs systems or landscape and territory apprehension by past cultures. \nThis is especially \nimportant in those cultural contexts, such as the ‘megalithic’ phenomena, where there are no written additional sources (Hoskin, 2001; González\n-García and \nBelmonte, 201\n0). This is the case of the Hafit and Umm en Nar c\nultures that dominated \nthe \neast\nern corner\n of the Arabian Peninsula during the Chalcolithic\n and the Early Bronze \nAge (EBA, third \nmillennium BC), in the so-called land of Magan (present day Oman and \nthe Emirates). In a field campaign in January 2012 several ancient EBA necropolises of the \nregion\n were visited and (when possible) measured in an attempt to shed some light on \nthe orientation customs of these ancient people. This paper presents the data for about\nseventy\n monuments,\n and the first outcomes of the fieldwork show that certain customs \nwere \npresent in the data\n that\n are far from being easily understood. This is the first systematic archaeoastronomical approach ever conducted in the Arabian Peninsula.
