Abstract

With a focus on the twentieth century, this entry traces the evolution of library collections and services for African Americans and the corresponding developments in education for librarianship and in the library profession. Rather than presenting a single chronological narrative, topics are discussed in turn, including public libraries, college and university libraries, education for librarianship, desegregation, professional associations, and collections, with some emphasis throughout on particularly influential African American librarians.
