Beginning with our lived experiences as a long-time historic interpreter and a frequent visitor to historic house museums, our chapter explores the complexities of how gender is performed at the John Walter Historic House Museum (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). Through archival research of the life of Annie Elizabeth Walter – the wife of John Walter – we confront the challenges of enacting a conventionally understood feminist interpretation in house museums. Engaging in a critical reproductive praxis, we explore how historical constructs of gender is pedagogically reproduced in the interpretation at the museum, how it informed our research, and where the spaces were to challenge these constructions in order to present new pedagogical possibilities.
