Abstract

This article aims to make explicit the theoretical underpinnings of person-centered expressive arts therapy (PCEAT). We introduce PCEAT with a summary of the person-centered perspective on creativity, and expressive therapy, followed by a discussion which connects it to the fundamental principles of the person-centered approach (PCA), specifically the nature of the organism, and the nondirective attitude of the therapist. The article concludes with some thoughts about how expressive therapy facilitates individual and collective action, and the peace movement. Drawing on Natalie Rogers's work on creativity (N. Rogers, 1993/2000 Rogers, N. 2000. The creative connection: Expressive arts as healing, Ross-on-Wye, UK: PCCS Books. (Original work published 1993). [Google Scholar], 2011 Rogers, N. 2011. The creative connection for groups: Person-centered expressive arts for healing and social change, Palo Alto, CA: Science and Behavior Books. [Google Scholar]), and an invited lecture on expressive arts and peace (N. Rogers, 2004 Rogers, N. 2004. Expressive arts for peace: Using the creative process to connect to the world (Temenos, Producer) [DVD]. Available from Temenos, 55 Westbourne Road, Sheffield S10 2QT, UK [Google Scholar]), the article aims to make explicit the theoretical underpinnings of person-centered expressive arts therapy.
