Abstract

No spin-singlet bb quarkonium state has yet been observed. In this paper we discuss the production of the singlet P-wave bb and cc 1P1 states hb and hc. We consider two possibilities. In the first the 1P1 states are produced via the electromagnetic cascades \ensuremathΥ(3S)\ensuremath→\ensuremathηb(2S)+\stackrel\ensuremath→\ensuremathγhb+\ensuremathγ\stackrel\ensuremath→\ensuremathγ\ensuremathηb+\ensuremathγ\ensuremathγ\ensuremathγ and \ensuremathψ^\ensuremath'\ensuremath→\ensuremathηc^\ensuremath'+\stackrel\ensuremath→\ensuremathγhc+\ensuremathγ\stackrel\ensuremath→\ensuremathγ\ensuremathηc+\ensuremathγ\ensuremathγ\ensuremathγ. A more promising process consists of single pion transition to the 1P1 state followed by the radiative transition to the 11S0 state: \ensuremathΥ(3S)\ensuremath→hb+\ensuremathπ0\ensuremath→\ensuremathηb+\ensuremathπ0+\ensuremathγ and \ensuremathψ^\ensuremath'\ensuremath→hc+\ensuremathπ0\ensuremath→\ensuremathηc+\ensuremathπ0+\ensuremathγ. For a million \ensuremathΥ(3S) or \ensuremathψ^\ensuremath''s produced we expect these processes to produce several hundred events.
