Abstract Keen to curb the influence of Perseus and Macedon, the Senate declared war in 172 bc . The consul crossed the Adriatic and established a camp, meeting a well‐prepared Macedonian force. Following an inconclusive initial engagement, the Romans limited themselves to small operations and gathering reinforcements. In the following years two abortive invasions of Macedon were beset by logistical difficulties. However, in 168 the Romans, now commanded by Lucius Aemilius Paulus, were able to maneuver Perseus out of his fortified positions and pursued him into Macedon, inflicting a crushing defeat at Pydna. Perseus was subsequently captured and his kingdom divided into four states ruled by pro‐Roman oligarchies; other Greek states, including Rhodes, were brought to heel, and Epirus was plundered.
