A large number of German publications on Chinese medicine were written during the period of German colonial expansion in China. This study examines how these publications described and evaluated Chinese medicine and the factors that influenced the authors’ opinions of Chinese medicine. Thus, it describes issues of intercultural understanding during the colonial era.
