Abstract

In the 7 th to the 9 th century Rome was extensively affected by Greek-speaking immigrants and their descendants. The book examines two groups of such migrants in diachronic comparison: monks and papal officials. It focuses on how migrants positioned themselves at different periods and different local responses to them. In this way, it provides a migration-centered historical view of early medieval local society in Rome.
