In 2025, the annual meeting of the Population Genetics Group (PopGroup) returned to Sheffield, U.K., for the third time. The timing could not have been more fitting, given the University of Sheffield is where Roger Butlin built much of his career, and the meeting happened to coincide with his retirement. It was also the 42nd PopGroup that Roger had attended, making it the perfect event to celebrate his contributions to scientific knowledge and our research community. On the final afternoon, some of his colleagues delivered a series of talks—part science, part anecdote—reflecting on Roger’s scientific contributions and what it has meant to work alongside him. Given his contributions to the broader community—including the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) for which he served as President and was elected Distinguished Fellow in 2019—we felt it would be a missed opportunity not to share these reflections more widely with the broader community.
