Th is situat ion is perhaps not unexpected , since higher level group ings reached by lexicostatistical means alone have been shown to be rather unreliable in the Australian language context .The three 'groups' wh ich appear on page viii are therefore based as mu ch on comparat ive morphological as lexical mat erial, and will be seen to be borne out as the comparat ive gramm atical evidence is presented.2 Maranunggu was used as the language of elicitation for some of the mat erial presented here , where the informant s' knowledge of Engl ish was inadequat e for the communication of point s of detail .
