Abstract

We report the first observation of e+e^\ensuremath- annihilation into states of positive C parity, namely, \ensuremathρ0\ensuremathρ0 and \ensuremathφ\ensuremathρ0. The two states are observed in the \ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath-\ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath- and K+K^\ensuremath-\ensuremathπ+\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath- final states, respectively, in a data sample of 225 fb^\ensuremath-1 collected by the BABAR experiment at the Positron-Electron Project II e+e^\ensuremath- storage rings at energies near √(s)=10.58 GeV. The distributions of cos\ensuremathθ*, where \ensuremathθ* is the center-of-mass polar angle of the \ensuremathφ meson or the forward \ensuremathρ0 meson, suggest production by two-virtual-photon annihilation. We measure cross sections within the range |cos\ensuremathθ*|<0.8 of \ensuremathσ(e+e^\ensuremath-\ensuremath→\ensuremathρ0\ensuremathρ0)=20.7\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.7(stat)\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi2.7(syst) fb and \ensuremathσ(e+e^\ensuremath-\ensuremath→\ensuremathφ\ensuremathρ0)=5.7\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.5(stat)\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.8(syst) fb.
