EIGHTY years since this Society had its first meeting! The eightieth time that a President stands before the Society's members to consider aspects and orientations of folklore, or to review and take stock of the Folk-Lore Society its scope and its aims, its successes and failures, its hopes and disappointments and hopes renewed! For your current President this is a daunting thought, in view of my rash undertaking to give you tonight a fresh assessment of our octogenarian life. I should like to begin by quoting the peroration to a Balochi epic poem, which is full of the very spirit of folklore. It runs: 'This is our track and story, this is the home of the true Rinds, a name exalted among tribes. If you do not believe it, no-one has seen it with his eyes, there are no ancient documents or witnesses to attest it, but there are tales upon tales; everyone says that so it was.
