Abstract The Breeders were a single‐issue environmental group that made itself known after authorities in Southern California decided to spray the pesticide malathion to stop an outbreak of Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) infestation in September 1989. The Breeders claimed to possess medflies, which they would release if the pesticide spraying was to take place. Because the medfly infestation did not fit the natural pattern, an investigation was done to determine the etiology of the infestation that found there was insufficient evidence to identify this infestation as an intentional introduction. As the Breeders has not been heard from for over 20 years, its leadership probably will never be known.
