Oryzomys gorgasi, a new species of palustrine rice rat from the ciénaga forests of northwestern Colombia, is the first member of the Oryzomys palustris group discovered in South America. It is compared with other members of the group and with the more or less superficially similar and sympatric cricetines, Oryzomys concolor, O. capito, Nectomys alfari, and the extraterritorial Oryzomys subflavus. The zoogeography of the O. palustris group is discussed.
