Abstract

The latest measurements of the atomic level width in \ensuremathΣ-hyperonic Pb atoms offer the most accurate datum in the region of low-energy \ensuremathΣ-hyperon physics. Atomic widths are due to the \ensuremathΣN-\ensuremathΛN conversion which in high-angular-momentum states is dominated by one-pion exchange. A joint analysis of the \ensuremathΣ^\ensuremath-\stackrel\ensuremath→p\ensuremathΛn scattering data and atomic widths allows us to extract the pion-hyperon coupling constant f_\ensuremathπ\ensuremathΛ\ensuremathΣ2/4\ensuremathπ=0.048\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.005 (stat) \ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.004 (syst) or G_\ensuremathπ\ensuremathΛ\ensuremathΣ2=13.3\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi1.4 (stat) \ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi1.1 (syst).
