Electroweak penguin (EWP) amplitudes are studied model independently in B meson decays to charmless final states consisting of a vector meson (V) and a pseudoscalar meson (P). A set of SU(3) relations is derived between EWP contributions and tree amplitudes, in the approximation of retaining only the dominant EWP operators Q9 and Q10. Two applications are described for constraining the weak phase \ensuremathγ, in B^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi\ensuremath→\ensuremathρ^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fiK0 and B^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi\ensuremath→\ensuremathρ0K^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi (or B^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi\ensuremath→K^*\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi\ensuremathπ0 and B^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi\ensuremath→K*0\ensuremathπ^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi), and in B0\ensuremath→K^*\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath∓ and B^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi\ensuremath→\ensuremathφK^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi. Theoretical uncertainties are discussed.
