Abstract

An empirically successful mass formula derived long ago from hadronic string models is not explained by symmetries of the QCD Lagrangian. Consider that M_\ensuremathρ2\ensuremath-M_\ensuremathπ2=MK*2\ensuremath-MK2 to a few percent accuracy. We derive this and other equal spacing relations using chiral symmetry and several assumptions about the chiral transformation properties of the hadronic mass-squared matrix. We discuss the possible significance of these assumptions in the context of QCD.
