Abstract

By reacting Na 2 O, which was produced in situ from NaN 3 and NaNO 2 , with reactive ZnO in the solid state, the synthesis of Na 2 ZnO 2 has been achieved. Na 2 ZnO 2 is metastable up to about 750°C. The novel sodium zincate crystallizes in the spaceogroup P2 1 /c (No. 14) with the lattice parameters a = 7.7352(2), b = 5.9782(2), c = 5.7248(2) Å, β = 94.934(3)°, Z = 4. According to a single crystal structure determination it is an representative of the anti type of the Ln 2 S 2 O (Ln = Er, Tm, Yb, Dy) structure.
