Suppression of electron current \ensuremathΔI through a 1D channel of length L connecting two Fermi liquid reservoirs is studied taking into account the umklapp electron-electron interaction induced by a periodic potential. This interaction causes Hubbard gaps EH for L\ensuremath→\ensuremath∞. In the perturbative regime where EH\ensuremath≪vc/L ( vc is the charge velocity), and for small deviations \ensuremathδn of the electron density from its commensurate values, \ensuremath-\ensuremathΔI/V can diverge with some exponent as voltage V or temperature T decreases above Ec\phantom\rule0ex0ex=\phantom\rule0ex0exmax(vc/L,vc\ensuremathδn), while it goes to zero below Ec. This results in a nonmonotonic behavior of the conductance.
