▪ Abstract This review discusses the experimental and theoretical status of various parton-model sum rules. The basis of the sum rules in perturbative quantum chromodynamics is discussed. Their use in extracting the value of the strong coupling constant is evaluated, and the failure of the naive version of some of these sum rules is assessed.
