Fears have been expressed about the integration of human and physical geography. The arguments for separation include the supposed irrelevance of the physical environment in spatial analysis, the alleged decrease in the importance of the physical environment for human affairs, the increasing need for specialization, the advantages to be gained from outward links, and the lack of success achieved by physical geographers in integrating human processes. These arguments have limited utility, go against many of the traditions of geography and would cause a reduction in the contribution that geographers could make to fundamental world problems.
