A basic idea of Dirichlet is to study a collection of interesting quantities <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> a n n ≥ 1 \an\n≥ 1 </inline-formula> by means of its Dirichlet series in a complex variable <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> w w </inline-formula> : <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> ∑ n ≥ 1 a n n − w ∑ n≥ 1ann-w </inline-formula> . In this paper we examine this construction when the quantities <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> a n an </inline-formula> are themselves infinite series in a second complex variable <inline-formula content-type="math/mathml"> s s </inline-formula> , arising from number theory or representation theory. We survey a body of recent work on such series and present a new conjecture concerning them.
