Abstract

We have observed the rare decay B⁰\ensuremath→\ensuremathρ⁺\ensuremathρ^\ensuremath- in a sample of 89 million BB pairs recorded with the BABAR detector. The number of observed events is 88_\ensuremath-21⁺²³\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi9, with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations with systematic uncertainties included. The branching fraction and the longitudinal polarization are measured to be B(B⁰\ensuremath→\ensuremathρ⁺\ensuremathρ^\ensuremath-)=(25_\ensuremath-6\ensuremath-6⁺⁷⁺⁵)\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi10^\ensuremath-6 and \ensuremathΓ_L/\ensuremathΓ=0.98_\ensuremath-0.08^+0.02\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.03, respectively.
