Abstract

We have observed the rare decay B0\ensuremath→\ensuremathρ+\ensuremathρ^\ensuremath- in a sample of 89 million BB pairs recorded with the BABAR detector. The number of observed events is 88_\ensuremath-21+23\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi9, with a significance of 5.1 standard deviations with systematic uncertainties included. The branching fraction and the longitudinal polarization are measured to be B(B0\ensuremath→\ensuremathρ+\ensuremathρ^\ensuremath-)=(25_\ensuremath-6\ensuremath-6+7+5)\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi10^\ensuremath-6 and \ensuremathΓL/\ensuremathΓ=0.98_\ensuremath-0.08+0.02\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.03, respectively.
