Abstract

We report the first observation of the decay B0\ensuremath→D^\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fiD^*\ensuremath∓ with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e^\ensuremath- Collider operated at the \ensuremathΥ(4S) resonance. The sum of branching fractions B(B0\ensuremath→D+D^*\ensuremath-)+B(B0\ensuremath→D^\ensuremath-D*+) is measured to be (1.17\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.26_\ensuremath-0.25+0.22)\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi10^\ensuremath-3 using the full reconstruction method where both charmed mesons from B0 decays are reconstructed. A consistent value [(1.48\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.38_\ensuremath-0.31+0.28)\ifmmode×\else\texttimes\fi10^\ensuremath-3] is obtained using a partial reconstruction technique that uses only the slow pion from the D^*\ensuremath-\ensuremath→D0\ensuremathπ^\ensuremath- decay and a fully reconstructed D+ to reconstruct the B0.
