Abstract

The first detailed measurements of the centrality dependence of strangeness production in p\ensuremath-A collisions are presented. \ensuremathΛ and KS dn/dy distributions from 17.5 GeV/ c p\ensuremath-Au collisions are shown as a function of ``grey'' track multiplicity and the estimated number of collisions, \ensuremathν, made by the proton. The \ensuremathν dependence of the \ensuremathΛ yield deviates from a scaling of p\ensuremath-p data by the number of participants, increasing faster than this scaling for \ensuremathν\ensuremath≤5 and saturating for larger \ensuremathν. A slower growth in KS multiplicity with \ensuremathν is observed, consistent with a weaker \ensuremathν dependence of KK production than YK production.
