Abstract

The charged \ensuremathΣb and \ensuremathΣb* states have recently been reported by the CDF Collaboration. The relation of their reported charge-averaged masses to expectations based on the quark model is reviewed briefly. A relation is proved among the \ensuremathΔI=1 electromagnetic mass differences \ensuremathΣ1\ensuremath≡M(\ensuremathΣ+)\ensuremath-M(\ensuremathΣ^\ensuremath-), \ensuremathΣ1*\ensuremath≡M(\ensuremathΣ*+)\ensuremath-M(\ensuremathΣ^*\ensuremath-), \ensuremathΣb1\ensuremath≡M(\ensuremathΣb+)\ensuremath-M(\ensuremathΣb^\ensuremath-), and \ensuremathΣb1*\ensuremath≡M(\ensuremathΣb*+)\ensuremath-M(\ensuremathΣb^*\ensuremath-). The relation is \ensuremathΣb1*\ensuremath-\ensuremathΣb1=(ms/mb)(\ensuremathΣ1*\ensuremath-\ensuremathΣ1), leading to the expectation \ensuremathΣb1*\ensuremath-\ensuremathΣb1=0.40\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.07 MeV.
