Abstract

We directly fit the experimentally measured energy dependence of the average value of 1\ensuremath-thrust, 〈1\ensuremath-T〉, over the e+e^\ensuremath- center-of-mass energy range Q\phantom\rule0ex0ex=\phantom\rule0ex0ex14--172GeV to the quantum chromodynamics expectation obtained by integrating up the evolution equation for d〈1\ensuremath-T〉/dlogQ in terms of 〈1\ensuremath-T〉. We fit for \ensuremathΛ_MS(5), uncalculated O(\ensuremathαs3) and higher perturbative corrections parametrized by the scheme invariant \ensuremathρ2, and the parameter \ensuremathλ which characterizes the magnitude of the leading 1/Q power corrections. We find \ensuremathΛ_MS(5)\phantom\rule0ex0ex=\phantom\rule0ex0ex245_\ensuremath-17+20MeV, which is equivalent to \ensuremathαs(MZ)\phantom\rule0ex0ex=\phantom\rule0ex0ex0.1194\ifmmode±\else\textpm\fi0.0014. In this approach, there is no error associated with the choice of the renormalization scale \ensuremathμ.
