Abstract

The development and transmission of Nemhelix bakeri Morand et Petter, a parasite of the genital tract of Helix aspersa Müller, are described. Free stages of this nematode were not found and laboratory infestations were not successful. The parasites were observed with snail spermatophores exchanged during copulation. Young snails were not infected. The larval stages of N. bakeri differ from those of C. Dukae. Only the L2 stage has lips in N. bakeri, while all larval stages of C. dukae, except the L3 stage, have some. Paleontologie and biogeographic data accredit the thesis of a secondary evolution of Cosmocercidae in land snails. It seems that this evolution occurred independently, in North America for C. dukae and in Europe for N. bakeri.
