This tutorial introduces oxidative addition as a reactivity pattern and organizing principle for organometallic chemistry. The history, characteristics, and scope of oxidative addition are briefly surveyed, followed by a detailed examination of the variety of mechanisms found for the oxidative addition of alkyl halides and their relevance to practical applications.
