This chapter first describes the role of operant conditioning as it applies to parenting. It describes the variables that may influence parent and child behavior. Next, the chapter discusses parenting intervention strategies that have been empirically documented as successful. More recently, efforts have been made to develop parent-friendly packaged approaches, many of which have been deemed evidence-based. The chapter also describes these approaches along with a discussion of some barriers to successful parent training. Child development involves operant conditioning (learning) which produces changes in child behavior over time due to the reinforcing consequences that result from interactions between the child and the people (mostly parents), objects, and activities in the environment. Functional analysis can be advantageous as it allows for the development of behavioral interventions that are specific to the variables maintaining the problem behaviors exhibited by a particular child.
