Mobilizing the Archaeological Report for a Future of Reuse: Linked Open Data and the Scholar-Led Publication

Abstract

This article explores innovative, DIY approaches to archaeological reporting through a case study of the Eastern Korinthia Archaeological Survey (EKAS), a multidisciplinary project in Corinth, Greece. Drawing on Ivan Illich’s concept of conviviality, we highlight collaborative practices in archaeological knowledge making that extend from fieldwork through data preparation, study, analysis, and publication. By combining open data publication through platforms like Open Context with affordable practices in editing and publishing linked digital books, we show how scaffolding reuse can provide wider interpretive communities the tools for building arguments from data. The article advances the concrete benefits and challenges of scholar-led, collaborative publishing processes in mobilizing the archaeological report to foster richer, more inclusive studies of the past.
