Extending Research on the Universality of Argument Quality Evaluation to a Croatian Context

Abstract

Researchers in argumentation and communication have long time been interested in how argument quality affects claim acceptance. In recent years, experimental studies have explored this relationship following criteria from argumentation theory to differentiate high-quality from low-quality arguments. Collecting data in various countries, these studies generally show that high-quality arguments outperform low-quality arguments. The current study adds a Croatian context to extant research, as Central and Eastern European countries have not yet been involved. Results from an experimental study show that Croatian participants’ claim acceptance is also dependent on argument quality, and that low-quality arguments are as effective as no arguments.
