The chapter analyzes episodes of escalation and of moderation in the first fifteen years of the Cold War. It examines the beginnings of the conflict resolution field. Then it analyzes major events in the Cold War context, 1945–1968, including the Arab-Israeli conflict, covert interventions, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the escalating Vietnam War. The chapter concludes with reflections on the episodes and events from a constructive conflict approach. Actions by nongovernmental organizations and people as well as by government officials are discussed. Throughout, the chapter suggests possible alternative policies than the more destructive ones implemented. Some of the alternatives were proposed at the time and others are presently derived from the approach.
