Islamic Studies are in constant methodological flux. Without a coherent methodological approach to the study of Islam and Muslims the field is experiencing a methodological morass. The chapter analyzes sources and effects of this worry. It further suggests a potential way out of the quagmire in the study of lived Islam. The analysis unpacks a phenomenological understanding of contemporary Islam by recycling the established terminology within the field of Islamic Studies, including Islamdom, Islamicate, Lived Islam and Muslimness. The potential of phenomenological approach in the study of lived Islam offers an unconventional, but worthwhile, way out of the current morass in Islamic Studies. The main argument is that this is particularly useful in exploring Lived Islam in study of Muslims’ experiences of Islam and formations of Muslimness.
