Impoundment of the reservoir started in October 2005, and a local network of 40 broadband stations in the Garhwal–Kumaun Himalaya was established in April 2005 and operated until June 2008. The first earthquake in the vicinity of the reservoir was recorded by this network in December 2005. The majority of the earthquakes recorded by this network were located farther north of the Tehri dam in the Main Central thrust (MCT) zone, where the earthquakes of the Himalayan seismic belt are concentrated. A cluster of earthquakes was located immediately south of the dam with no earthquakes immediately north of it; however, no earthquake in the global catalog (1967–2014) is located to the south of the dam. To analyze the effect of the Tehri reservoir impoundment on the postimpoundment south cluster identified by the local seismic network, we did a fault stability analysis. Assuming that all of these earthquakes occurred on the Main Himalayan thrust (MHT), changes in stress and pore pressure due to reservoir impoundment have been simulated. The analysis shows that reservoir impoundment has destabilizing and stabilizing effects on the MHT to the south and north of the dam, respectively. Absence of seismicity in the preimpoundment period in the region south of the dam implies that the Tehri reservoir impoundment triggered earthquakes of south cluster. However, immediately north of the dam, a few earthquakes are reported by some Himalayan networks and in the International Seismological Centre (ISC) catalog in the preimpoundment period, which suggests that either the reservoir inhibited the occurrence of earthquakes in this region or the preimpoundment earthquakes were mislocated and they actually belonged to the Himalayan seismic belt, farther north of the reservoir.
