Abstract

SummaryThe author describes as Schlueterimyia cenomanica, gen. et sp. n. a fossil Diptera from the Cenomanian of N-W France. After a discussion on the main points of the morphology and taxonomy of past and present Mycetophiloidea, and especially of the Keroplatinae, it is proposed to divide the latter into three subfamilies: Arachnocampinae, Macrocerinae, and Keroplatinae. After a cladistic analysis of the characters visible on S. cenomanica, this taxon is classified in the Macrocerinae. On the basis of this Mesozoic fossil, of other paleontological data, and of biogeographical evidence, the age of the Keroplatidae is inferred to be at least Middle Jurassic. Following Hennig's criterion of absolute age, it is therefore suggested to rank as full families the groups of Mycetophiloidea currently treated by most authors as subfamilies.
