Abstract

In recent years, considerable attention has been directed toward enhancing both the quantity and quality of agricultural production. While advancements in mechanization and hybrid seed development have contributed to agricultural growth, soil quality – particularly the presence of organic matter – remains a critical determinant of sustainable productivity. Humic substances, especially humic acid (HA), have emerged as effective natural amendments for improving soil fertility and supporting crop performance. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the role of HA in enhancing soil structure, nutrient availability, and plant growth. Various methods of HA application – including soil application, foliar spraying, seed treatment, root dipping, drip irrigation, and combinations with inorganic fertilizers – are discussed, with soil application consistently identified as the most effective. HA is commercially available in multiple formulations such as liquid, powder, granules, and flakes. Experimental studies across a range of crops have demonstrated that the application of HA leads to improved plant traits, higher yields, and enhanced soil physicochemical properties. This review aims to clarify the multifaceted benefits of humic acid in modern agriculture, emphasizing its potential as a sustainable tool for improving soil health and boosting crop productivity.
